ISO 22041 Standards Testing for Refrigerated Storage Cabinets

ISO 22041 is the international standard governing the performance and energy consumption of professional refrigerated storage cabinets used in commercial environments like kitchens, hospitals, and canteens.

It provides a standardised framework to ensure cabinets are energy efficient and can maintain optimal food temperature. ISO 22041 testing covers verification of thermal stability, cooling efficiency, and daily power consumption to ensure cabinets meet Australian requirements.

Testing Framework & Conditions

Testing is rigorously structured to ensure cabinets can safely maintain specific food temperatures under controlled environments.

  • Standard Ambient Conditions: Tests are typically conducted in a controlled environment set at 30 degrees Celsius with 55% relative humidity (Climate Class 4).
  • Temperature Testing: Test packages (simulating food loads) equipped with thermocouples are placed inside the display area. The cabinet must maintain these packages within strict temperature limits based on the unit’s temperature classification.
  • Door Opening Tests: A door opening sequence in accordance with ISO 22041 simulates real-world usage with regular opening and closing motions during the test. 
  • Electrical & Energy Consumption: The cabinet’s energy use is calculated over a 24-hour period and used to determine its Energy Efficiency Index (EEI).

Our low velocity parallel airflow chamber

This chamber is specifically designed for the testing of refrigerated display cabinets and refrigerated storage cabinets and conforms to the test room requirements specified in ISO 23953-2 and ISO 22041.

This unique test chamber is designed to provide consistent, stable operating conditions no matter what equipment is under test.

The colour of the room, the number of lights, temperature control, humidity control, and low-velocity airflow all contribute to our ability to replicate ambient test conditions and airflow, every time.

Test room requirements for ISO 22041 are listed as follows; however our chamber can also achieve higher or lower temperatures, airflow rates and humidity levels.

  • 9 metres long × 5 metres wide × 3 metres high
  • Low-velocity, high-volume parallel airflow design
  • Air velocity range: 0.1 to 0.2 m/s
  • DB control temperature range: 16°C to 40°C +/- 1°C tolerance
  • Environmental control tolerance of +/-1°C temperature and +/-3% relative humidity
  • Humidity control range 40–80% RH
