SuperCool Competitions Department Events and Milestones
The SuperCool Competitions Department competed in the 2025 Queensland Historic Road Racing Championships held at Morgan Park Raceway 10-11 September 2025.
This race meeting was first ever for the newly assembled machine and the team. We were lucky enough to have Daniel ‘Max’ Marshall as our rider who was introduced to us by Grant Jordan at Motorcycle Dyno Tune (MDT). Racing a 125cc machine at Morgan Park was also a first-time event for Max. We entered the Period 4 Historic class for 125cc machines.
On practice day we encountered a back firing issue through the carburettors which we eventually traced back to a faulty CDI unit. Fortunately, we had the TA125 machine with us, which was on display at the Yamaha tent, so we were able to use its CDI unit. Once we installed it to the race bike, we still had bad ignition which we discovered was a timing issue from the wires on the bike being cross overed to suit its existing CDI unit that had been repaired incorrectly. We resolved the problem by reversing the low-tension CDI unit wires back to their original configuration. All thanks to some quick thinking from our Crew Chief James Mott.
Then we discovered a drop in compression on both cylinders rendering the bike almost impossible to start. We installed new cylinders, pistons and rings to finally get the bike running properly. This was later discovered being caused by excessive ring gap from the usual wear and bedding in that occurs on new cylinders and rings. We simply should have change the rings earlier.
All these issues caused us to miss practice and qualifying, so we appealed to the clerk of the course to allow us to race the next day which was agreed to provide we started from the back of the grid.
For the first two races, the ambient conditions were 8-12 °C and 58-63% relative humidity (RH). The average exhaust gas temperature (EGT) was approximately 720 °F with a peak of 840 °F down the straight. In third and last race, ambient conditions were 14 °C and 53% (RH), and the average (EGT) was approximately 650 °F with a peak of 930 °F.
Max did a superb job of riding the bike, he finished first in the first race, third in the second race, and we won the third race. He reported clutch slippage occurring at around 8500 rpm, therefore he was unable to use maximum revs to 11500 which means we have more power available for the next meeting once we rectify the clutch issue.
The placings in each race and total of 67 points gave us the Championship overall, which was a great delight.
